Transformation - for the Better or Worse?

The word 'transformation' is often heard of as the way forward for many corporations or business entities where impactful changes are often seen as the ultimate results that are expected to steer the organisation towards a more sustainable future direction / position.  But what exactly does 'transformation' mean?

Dictionary.com defines 'transformation' as follow: -

1.  the act or process of transforming.

2.  the state of being transformed.
3.  change in form, appearance, nature, or character.

Looking at the definition above, notice that there are a few key factors that assure a successful transformation - act/process, changes in nature, and the desired end state.  Let's dwell into these important factors.

a)   Act/Process

For any change to take effect, there must be a series of planned events or chain of actions that are required to execute the agenda of change.

b)   Changes in Nature

The key areas that require improvement should be identified at the onset of the transformation journey.  Transformation is good for namesake only if there are uncertainties or lack of thorough understanding on the existing areas of weaknesses where changes are desirable.

c)   Desired End State

Transformation can be completely futile if the ultimate results of the whole exercise are clear to each and every member of the organisation that partakes in it.  This is important as transformation can be a resource-driven, complex and time-consuming process and an organisation would not want to waste critical resources and time 'for the fun of it'.

If executed diligently by addressing the key factors stated hitherto, the transformation journey can be a smooth one, delivering its intended results and end state.  On the contrary, weak planning due to whimsical directions of the management team or corporation, may easily lead to incorrect action plans and ambiguous end states.  Hence, the best formula for costly debacles.

Apart from what is said above, another critical consideration for transformation is the existence of capable Board and Management members who possessed good hindsight and are disciplined to take on the burden of transformation until such journey ends.  Unfortunately, many corporations are only concerned about the hypes and publicity brought forth by the announcement of transformation initiatives but failed miserably in the execution towards attaining the desired end states.
