The Unexpected

On a fine Monday morning, I embarked on a routine journey to the office to face yet another hectic day at work.  Was having my usual breakfast at the nearby restaurant and decided to call a colleague to join me for a brief chat.  The conversation proceeded as it normally would, of a typical colleague's rantings and discussion over work issues.

Proceeded to the office thereafter and that colleague brought her notebook PC and came into my room.  Discussion resumed over some topics on the progress of certain projects.  Then came the big surprise that crushed onto my head like ten tonnes of bricks.  I was badly taken aback and was in total disbelief when she told me that she had decided to resign from her current post.  I had always believed that I have structured a promising career path for her within the organisation and she played a pivotal role in the organisation's transformation journey.

The ensuing persuasions in retaining her were futile as she remained adamant on her decision.  At last, I had no choice but to reluctantly accept her immediate resignation notice.  My heart began beating to the resonance of disappointment and emptiness, and I suddenly felt so powerless and incapable to turn things around, hoping for her change of mind.  While I can easily replace her by hiring another incumbent for the role, I hesitated on such a move.  Perhaps, I needed some time to get over the fact that someone whom I hired, trusted, and harboured high hopes will ever leave the team in such a short stint of less than half a year, and furthermore in such a hasty manner of exodus.

These are some of the challenges that I have to encounter and everyday seems to present itself with different sets of challenges, surprises, and expectations.  In the past, I used to envy those seated at the top helm of the management team.  Now, I began to feel their pain.  It is never easy in managing human resources.  It's still a long and winding road towards attaining the organisation's ultimate transformation objectives and I hope there are opportunities to continue building a capable and formidable management team as the supporting pillars.

As for the colleague who is leaving the team, I sincerely wish her the very best in her future career endeavour and hope that she will find a more conducive working environment and culture that fit her style of work and personality.  As colleagues we will not be, but as friends - always.
